I REMEMBER the one cold February night, around 2 a.m., driving down a road in my old and broken Volkswagen — a car older than me. I was heading towards Windy City, with nothing but a worn-out bag in the trunk, an empty stomach, and not a cent in my pocket. I had left everything behind, determined to begin a new chapter in my life.

I could already feel the weight of the darkness ahead — something heavy, something difficult. The kind of silence that doesn’t just surround you, but sinks into your bones.

I lit my last cigarette. No music played. The windows were down, and the cold air bit at my face. Then, for the first time, my thoughts felt loud — like they had waited years to finally speak.

And in that stillness, something shifted.

For the first time, I felt free.

I looked up at the night sky — cloudless, endless, dark. And I heard a voice. Calm, steady, not mine… but somehow familiar.

“You’re on the right path. Trust me. Everything will be alright. I promise you — this night will be yours.”

And then, out of nowhere — a roar. A sharp, mechanical scream slicing through the silence. Headlights. A blue Ferrari sped past from the opposite direction.

I caught a glimpse: a man in a sleek black suit behind the wheel. Cigarette in his mouth, a wide smile stretched across his face. Piles of cash on the passenger seat, some bills flying out through the open roof.

And then I saw his face.

He looked exactly like me.
